The following is a basic outline for a devotion based on Ephesians 2:1-10

The theme of the evening was Zombie Apocalypse! We played lots of various versions of what would normally be called “Stuck-In-The-Mud”, except with a Zombie theme.

Zombie Survival Pack Activity – Give the small group some pens and a large piece of paper. The group must choose 10 items (whole team must agree) to go in their Survival Back Pack from the list (on Powerpoint).

So what does the bible have to say about Zombies…?

Well… as it so happens quite a lot more than you’d think!

The bible, in some ways, could be seen like a survival guide to a zombie apocalypse. Let me explain:

  • Creation – all good.
  • Sin entered and infected all mankind.
  • All humans essentially ended up like Zombies! Looking alive, moving like we are alive, eating like we are alive… but inside. Dead.

Ephesians 2:1-3 says this:

Once you were dead because of your disobedience and your many sins. You used to live in sin, just like the rest of the world, obeying the devil—the commander of the powers in the unseen world. He is the spirit at work in the hearts of those who refuse to obey God. All of us used to live that way, following the passionate desires and inclinations of our sinful nature. By our very nature we were subject to God’s anger, just like everyone else.

Now… if I ever saw a Zombie. The first thing I’m going to do is try and find a big gun and kill said Zombie.

That’s what Zombies deserve for wanting to eat our brains!

Now, if you don’t mind the analogy, God sees our sin, kinda like Zombification. It’s ruined the people he made us to be and turned us into something else.

But instead of grabbing the biggest shot gun he could find… God did something else.

But God is so rich in mercy, and he loved us so much, that even though we were dead because of our sins, he gave us life when he raised Christ from the dead. (It is only by God’s grace that you have been saved!) For he raised us from the dead along with Christ…

Provide a quick run down of Jesus life, death and resurrection.

God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it. 10 For we are God’s masterpiece…

As a Christian, I realise that I’m not better than anyone else living in our world.

But God, sees me differently. He sees me as someone who was once a Zombie – but who’s getting treatment.

That treatment will one day restore me to the kind of person I was supposed to be from the very beginning.

A masterpiece. Someone beautiful and truly good.

The problem with Zombies… Is that while we are Zombies, we often don’t realise it. It’s not until we see someone who is truly alive that the difference becomes obvious.

Jesus is the example of the first man to be truly alive. His was the first example, and the cure is starting to catch on.
